There is nothing to which Pein is old or new. (Nothing.) The classic oddity in almost everything he does. { LIKES } power, piercings, pain, winning, music, the Akatsuki, stormy weather, long-distance phone calls, guns, germs, steel, hot wax, the dead and dying, worthwhile endeavors, Celtic mythology. { DISLIKES } wasting his time, being touched, being disrespected, talking at great length, coins, letters.
Pein was born in Ceathrú Mór, Ireland without piercings. His father Seamus was an archaeologist obsessed with Celtic ruins, and his mother Agatha worked as his corresponding historian. Pein was somewhat a mystery to both of them with his naturally blank staring eyes, and ill-fitted anti-social disposition. He rarely spoke to either of them if he did not initiate the conversation and was very independent, driven to do something only if it was (or he had been convinced that it was) his own idea. He also greatly resented being touched for almost any reason. Even as a four-year-old he forced his elders to go to great lengths to earn his respect, refusing to obey them in the slightest, otherwise. His vocabulary was expansive and enviable, and his tone was almost always condescending regardless of a person’s age. His parents, slightly disturbed and put off by their young son’s behavior, sent him to live with an aunt at the age of six. Selby (the boy’s aunt) was similarly mystified by him but earned his respect rather easily by inviting him to watch when she abused his young cousins, Zephyr and Mathilda, who were about three months his junior. As such, she found that he would obey her almost happily and without question. This system remained reliable until Pein’s tenth birthday.
MAKE YOU ALL BELIEVE ME
After the resulting incident, Pein was sent home by Zephyr, the older of his two cousins, and from there was transferred to an expensive correctional facility in New York City for reasons not listed by American authorities. Whether he learned English well or not was never really established; however, he did become fluent in American Sign Language and pantomime, and after being released for the facility on good behavior after only sixteen weeks of having arrived, became deeply immersed in the music industry. Still only ten years of age, he did everything of his own accord, making his home on tour bus after tour bus of Indie bands determined to make it big. For two years he drifted from place to place, completely at home within the constant oncoming metal battalion of sounds (and even more at home as more and more of it seemed to find a home upon his face,) before finding himself in the company of Japanese producer by the name of Dynamite Tommy. Staying on with the band (so-called “WITHER”) for about eleven and a half months, Pein decided of his own accord that Tommy would adopt him and take him far away from the land his parents had inflicted upon him, and within months the producer had. Pein, twelve years old and now full of facial piercings, was moved to Tōkyō. Japan has been his ‘home’ ever since.
I’LL GET TO FAKING
Pein stayed on with “WITHER” and with Tommy for only five more months before taking his leave of them, his burning adoption papers in tow. He toured with the band “ANTI-NOSTALGIA” in the weeks following, and then moved himself in with the band’s female manager, Awa Kyoko. The woman, stiff and ten years his senior, received none of his respect but harbored an inordinate amount of affection for him as an ‘older sister’ of sorts, since he was so young to understand as much about music as he did (and does). She took on his education which had gone long unattended in his escapades away from home, and taught him to speak fluent, slightly accented Japanese. She taught him many things he had disregarded in years prior such as how to cook, clean, pay bills, drive a car, write a check, and other such skills required to live independently. Of all his self-acclaimed ‘keepers’, she was the most helpful and useful to him, evidenced by the full nineteen months he voluntarily spent as her house guest.
SHOW YOU ALL HOW TO GRIEVE
The relative pleasantness of this time in Pein’s life was abruptly disturbed by his parents making contact with him towards the very end of the nineteenth month. In a letter that arrived in an anonymous package forwarded from the correctional facility’s address in New York, Agatha described – in almost twenty-seven letters - a pregnancy that Pein had never witnessed, and the apparent joviality of his parents over the birth of his younger brother. With each post-marked stamp he flicked past, Pein’s rage grew and grew. From words in Irish and clumsy English flecked with young Aidan’s first insignificant coo, to those dappled with news of his cousin Mathilda’s impending wedding, to those strangled with awkward declarations by both parents that they were proud to have him as a son and could not wait for him to return home, Pein felt disgusted by the fact that either of them were still living and breathing. He left Kyoko’s house in a thunder never to return, having set taped the package itself open and upside down to a bottle rocket (so that it shot up into the sky and the letters shredded themselves and rained down like confetti on Yokohama). From one of her band mate’s computers, he hacked the global mainframe and altered his existence, so that he had never been born. He had simply appeared. He was a Celtic anomaly, a gift from the countless gods. And then Pein began making plans.
NO ONE WILL EVER
Having embraced his feelings of loathing for his parents – and, as it turned out, most of humanity – he immediately began mentally dismantling everything he had ever known. He retraced his steps and took himself away from the city and further into the countryside. Almost fourteen years old and irritated with be forced to depend on others for survival, he traveled on the shinkansen to Ōsaka and bought a cell phone with the last of what he had taken from Kyoko’s wallet so that he could begin working at the largest music store in town. With a capacity as a salesmen that outweighed his intimidating exterior, he was promoted quickly, and was soon making enough money to move from his place in an abandoned warehouse to a small apartment. Since he behaved much older than he looked, his supervisors had no real issue believe he was eighteen, something that consequently operated in many of the piercing and tattoo parlors within the city limits. By his fourteenth birthday, Pein had been pierced or tattooed in almost every place physically possible, was almost fifty pages into his Grande Manifesto, and had heard about a private art school off the coast called Oshima High.
SEE THINGS THE WAY I DO
Re-enrolling in school proved to be much more difficult than Pein had originally anticipated, and he ended up having to quit his job and move before he could apply for a spot which hardly bothered him. After enrolling, he found that readjusting to dealing with children his own age was – if possible – even more so. He withdrew from the social scene, choosing to focus more on his classmate’s derogatory attributes incase they helped him come up with something for his Manifesto. In fact, until meeting one Yokobue Tayuya, it is safe to say that Pein had never spoken more than ten words to another student at Oshima. She was quick to earn his respect after her infamous brawl with Uchiha Itachi halfway through the first semester wherein the two half beat one another to death, result in a broken ankle on Yokobue’s behalf and a fractured skull on Uchiha’s. After the two returned from their six week suspensions (having narrowly dodged expulsion) Pein was quick to introduce himself, and was one of the first to hear and evaluate Tayuya’s formulating of a plan to erect a student-based rebellion against all that plagued them. Taken by the idea, Pein was quick to voice his approval, as well as his loyalty as one of the purposed group’s members. Tayuya obliged him, and the Akatsuki was formed less than a few months later.
NO ONE WILL TRY
Pein participated in almost every Akatsuki-based activity from those moments onward: from member initiation to the crafting of individual branding irons to the planning of each and every torture. He was enthralled by the feel of it and indulged himself the same way he had indulged his musical obsession over the years. Though he never connected with his fellow members the way normal people are supposed to, he built up an incredible tolerance for them, studied each individual as a whole, and began to truly appreciate them as the flawed incarnations of gods. Slowly, Pein’s warped visual plane came full circle, and in his Manifesto (which was quickly growing to a length of close to two-hundred-sixty pages) he began to highlight certain qualities his members had that he found desirable in every human beings: a constant sense of oblique abnormality, the awkward feeling of never belonging, a fetish for pain, being in an almost constant state of dark calm or uncontrollable anger, sometimes both at the same time, pitting one’s self against humanity. He is the only one to ever know of this – he has never discussed with anyone his Manifesto, having never felt the need – but he found himself in some of the only appreciated company he had ever been in since his band-touring days, and he consciously made a place for himself as one of Tayuya’s many right hands.
I CAN’T BELIEVE I DIDN’T
Only in the past year has Pein truly drifted from the Oshima scene, in order to formally (and privately) go through the process of publishing his now finished five-hundred-and-forty-three page hand-written Grande Manifesto. It is now leather bound in his new apartment, having weathered the somewhat bloody return from Ireland. (His parents have been missing for almost half a year. Aiden has not yet been informed, since he is in boarding school across the ocean and the authorities still aren’t sure of what’s going on, but he is growing troubled by the absence of their usual letters. He hasn’t wondered yet if anything is wrong.) He is in the midst of translating it into English and Sign Language, and has enrolled in Oshima College for old time’s sake.
